How to start and grow a beauty TikTok (with data)
To start and grow a beauty TikTok, show the result in the first second, talk to camera instead of waiting for a trending song, use a few hashtags that describe the video and write the caption someone would type into search. Below, each rule comes with the numbers behind it from 145 recent top beauty TikToks in our sample, with Instagram Reels for contrast.
Updated Oct 26, 2026 · based on 145 videos from 130 creators · next refresh ~Nov 2, 2026 · How we measure
This guide is built from our TikTok beauty sample: recent public beauty videos ranked by views per day and refreshed about once a week. For each habit the top videos share, we show the number and the filming rule it leads to.
As of October 2026, the median beauty TikTok in the sample gets 18K views a day. These are videos that were already doing well, from creators in many countries, so read the numbers as what the winners look like, not as a promise. How we collect and rank: methodology. For this week’s actual videos and sounds, see beauty TikTok trends; this page covers the habits behind them.
Beauty TikTok growth rules at a glance
Seven rules, each checked against our TikTok beauty sample (145 videos). The sections below show the full numbers.
| Rule | What our beauty sample shows |
|---|---|
| Film GRWMs that tell one story while you do your face. | GRWM (get ready with me) has the fastest median of the formats we can read from captions: 39K views a day across 14 videos, 2.2× the sample median. |
| Keep it short and get to the result fast. | 46% of the videos run 1–3 minutes; the fastest median is under 15 seconds, at 33K views a day. |
| Talk to camera; a trending sound is optional. | 80% of the sample uses an original sound rather than a named track, and so does 83% of the 36 fastest. |
| Use 3–5 hashtags that say what the video is about. | The median top beauty TikTok carries 5 hashtags; 29% add a #fyp-style tag, which says nothing about the video. Tag count makes no clear difference here; the video does. |
| Write the caption as a search. | The median caption has 6 words before the hashtags; captions of 10+ words get 16K views a day at the median, shorter ones 18K. |
| Don’t wait for followers. | 51% of the videos come from accounts under 100K followers, and 89% of those under 10K got more views than the account has followers. |
| Judge each video on day three, against your own median. | Views pile up in the first days. See outlier videos. |
How to start a beauty TikTok
Five setup decisions to make before your first post.
- Pick one lane and one viewer. “Beauty” is too wide. “Makeup for hooded eyes”, “skincare for acne-prone teens” or “heatless curls for fine hair” tells viewers, and the feed, who each video is for. Stay in the lane for your first 30 videos.
- Stay on a personal account unless you need business tools. TikTok says businesses must use its Commercial Music Library, a pre-cleared catalog of about 1 million songs, for commercial posts (TikTok help center). Personal accounts keep the full sound library and stay eligible for the Creator Rewards Program. A salon or brand should take the business account and plan around original audio.
- Write a bio that names the lane. One line on what you post and for whom, such as “Hooded-eye makeup, drugstore only”.
- Fix light and sound before you buy gear. Face a window or a ring light, and use a clip-on mic if the room echoes. Viewers forgive a plain background, not a product texture they can’t see.
- Disclose free products in the video. Brands send PR packages even to small beauty accounts. The FTC says a disclosure belongs “in the video and not just in the description”, and free products count as well as paid deals (FTC influencer guide). Say who sent it, such as “Thanks to [brand] for the free product”, out loud and on screen.
Which beauty TikTok formats grow fastest
Beauty TikTok runs on a handful of repeatable formats. Decide which one you are filming before you start, because the format sets both the hook and the edit:
- Tutorial or routine. Step-by-step makeup, skincare or hair: the finished result is the promise, each step one shot.
- GRWM (get ready with me). You talk while you do your face. The routine is the excuse; the story is why people stay.
- Hack or quick fix. One mistake, one fix, usually under 30 seconds.
- Review, dupe or haul. A product judged on skin. A dupe, a cheap product set against an expensive one, gives the viewer a verdict to wait for.
- Before and after. The change is the hook, so it has to land in the first seconds.
| Format | Videos | Median views/day | vs. sample median | Saves per 1,000 views |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tutorial or routine | 43 30% | 7.5K | 0.4× | 22 |
| Hack or quick fix | 25 17% | 2.9K | 0.2× | 20 |
| GRWM (get ready with me) | 14 10% | 39K | 2.2× | 5.6 |
| Before and after | 5 3% | 13K | 0.8× | 24 |
| Review, dupe or haul | 5 3% | 9.6K | 0.5× | 31 |
| POV or skit | 3 2% | 21K | 1.2× | 8.3 |
| Trend remix | 3 2% | 3.9K | 0.2× | 37 |
| Quote or mindset | 1 1% | too few | — | — |
| Texture close-up or ASMR | 1 1% | too few | — | — |
| Other, or unclear from the caption | 45 31% | 23K | 1.3× | 18 |
What to do with it: GRWM (get ready with me) has the fastest median of the formats we can name, 39K views a day across 14 videos. Say the first line of the story before you pick up a brush; the routine keeps people watching, the story is why they stay. Tutorial or routine is the most common format here (43 of 145), so popular and fast are not the same thing. Review, dupe or haul gets the most saves per 1,000 views (31): film it when you want viewers to come back.
Formats are read from caption words, one per video; an empty or vague caption lands in “other”. The sample is found through beauty hashtags, which shapes the mix, so compare speeds rather than counts. Medians need 3 videos; comparisons need 5. We can’t see inside the videos, so the “how to film it” notes are our advice for each format, not a measurement.
How long should a beauty TikTok be?
There is no ideal length, only the length the look needs. Two things are worth knowing before you decide:
- Videos over a minute can earn. TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program pays for original videos “over a minute long”, for personal accounts with at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days (TikTok newsroom, March 2024). Near those numbers, a routine that runs 70 seconds is worth more than the same routine cut to 40.
- Short videos get replayed. A 10-second hack that loops twice counts two views, so the payoff has to come fast.
A practical test: write down the one result you are showing, then cut every second that doesn’t get the viewer closer to it.
| Length | Videos | Median views/day |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 seconds | 9 6% | 33K |
| 15–30 seconds | 14 10% | 18K |
| 30–60 seconds | 23 16% | 4.1K |
| 1–3 minutes | 67 46% | 18K |
| Over 3 minutes | 32 22% | 12K |
In our sample: the median beauty TikTok runs 86 seconds, and 66% run over a minute. The fastest median belongs to under 15 seconds, at 33K views a day. Short videos lead here. Keep a routine long only when the look needs the time, or when you are close to Creator Rewards eligibility, which pays only for videos over a minute.
Length and format travel together, since tutorials and GRWMs run longer than hacks, so read this next to the format table.
Do beauty TikToks need trending sounds?
Often not. Beauty is a talking niche: people watch to hear what you used, why, and what went wrong. Your voice, live or as a voiceover, shows up on TikTok as an original sound, and it carries the one thing a song can’t, which is the information.
- Talk first. If the video teaches something, your voice is the sound. Record the voiceover separately if you fumble lines while you apply.
- Put music under your voice, not instead of it. If silence feels empty, keep a quiet track low in the mix.
- Use a trending sound when it carries the format. Transitions on the beat, lip-syncs and trend remixes need their song. Check how widely it is used first: trending songs on TikTok shows counts. On a business account, only Commercial Music Library sounds are available.
In our sample: 116 of 145 beauty TikToks (80%) use an original sound rather than a named track. Among the 36 fastest by views per day, 30 do (83%). Median views per day: 19K with an original sound, 13K with a named track. Only 2 named tracks show up in two or more of these videos.
Rule: don’t hold a video back because you haven’t found a trending sound. Your voice is the default; a track is a choice for formats that need one.
“Original sound” is TikTok’s own label for audio that isn’t a named track: mostly voiceovers and live sound, but it also covers clips reused from other creators, so read it as “no named track”.
How many hashtags to use on a beauty TikTok
Hashtags tell TikTok what a video is about: TikTok lists captions, sounds and hashtags among the “video information” its For You feed uses (TikTok newsroom). They don’t rescue a weak video. Pick 3–5 that describe the video:
- The topic. A broad tag a viewer would follow, such as #makeup, #skincare or #hair.
- The problem. What your viewer is trying to fix, such as #hoodedeyes, #oilyskin or #frizzyhair.
- The viewer or the product type. Who it is for, such as #over40makeup, or what you used, such as #drugstoremakeup.
Skip #fyp, #foryou and #viral. They describe every video on the app, so they tell TikTok nothing about yours.
| Hashtag | Videos | Creators | Median views/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| #hairstyle | 17 | 15 | 6.5K |
| #skincare | 16 | 15 | 19K |
| #beauty | 13 | 11 | 3.9K |
| #makeup | 11 | 10 | 41K |
| #skincareroutine | 10 | 10 | 3.1K |
Tags on at least two videos by two different creators. We leave out the hashtags we use to find the sample, since every video in it carries one, and generic tags like #fyp. How we count: methodology.
The full list for this week is on beauty TikTok trends.
In our sample: the median top beauty TikTok carries 5 hashtags, counting every tag, and 29% add a #fyp-style tag.
Rule: use 3–5 tags that describe the video. Tag count makes no clear difference here; the video does.
Write the caption as a search
People use TikTok as a search engine for beauty: they type “eyeliner for hooded eyes” or “dupe for” a product they can’t afford. TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program even scores videos on search value (TikTok newsroom). Your caption tells search what the video answers:
- Name the look and the problem. “Soft liner for hooded eyes, 5 minutes” can be found; “my fave look lately” can’t.
- Put the searchable words first. The feed shows only the start of a caption. Repeat the same words as your first on-screen text.
- Name products by type. “drugstore concealer” or “tinted sunscreen” matches more searches than a brand name alone.
In our sample: the median caption has 6 words, not counting hashtags. 38% run 10 words or more, 48% run 1–9, and 14% have no words at all. Median views per day: 16K for captions of 10+ words, 18K for shorter ones.
Rule: write one sentence that says what the video shows and who it is for. It costs nothing, and it is the part of the video search can read.
Captions in other languages are counted too. Read these medians as a pattern, not a cause.
Can a small beauty account break out?
Yes. TikTok says neither follower count nor a history of high-performing videos is a direct factor in what its For You feed recommends (TikTok newsroom). What a small account lacks is a track record with its own audience, so each video has to win strangers on its own. That favors one clear, specific promise (“the concealer trick for dark circles”) over a general one (“my everyday makeup”).
| Account size | Videos | Median views/day | Median views ÷ followers | Views above followers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10K | 18 12% | 3.3K | 17× | 16 of 18 |
| 10K–100K | 56 39% | 9.2K | 2.2× | 38 of 56 |
| 100K–1M | 46 32% | 5.8K | 0.3× | 16 of 46 |
| 1M and up | 25 17% | 48K | 0.2× | 2 of 25 |
In our sample: 51% of the 145 videos with a known follower count come from accounts under 100K followers, and 12% from accounts under 10K. Of those under 10K, 16 got more views than the account has followers and 10 got ten times as many.
Small accounts that broke out in this refresh:
- @izzythepa, 2.6K followers: a TikTok with 2.5M views, 974× the follower count.
- @j0ana416, 1.7K followers: a TikTok with 604K views, 363× the follower count.
- @anjaliedsouzaa, 1.8K followers: a TikTok with 424K views, 231× the follower count.
Rule: treat followers as a lagging number. Score each video on views per day against your own median, and remake whatever beats it.
These videos were already doing well, so the table shows that small accounts can break out, not how often a typical one does. Follower counts are as of the last time we saw each video.
Beauty on TikTok vs Instagram Reels
Posting the same beauty video to Instagram Reels is fine, with three adjustments:
- Post a clean file. Export without the TikTok watermark. Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, said in October 2024 that Instagram tries not to recommend Reels carrying other apps’ logos (Social Media Today). Your own logo is fine.
- Choose the cover. The profile grid shows covers, so pick a frame with the finished look and a few words of text.
- Re-check the sound. A TikTok sound may not exist on Instagram. Original audio travels; for music, pick a track inside Instagram.
| Beauty sample, last 21 days | TikTok | Instagram Reels |
|---|---|---|
| Videos | 145 | 377 |
| Median views per day | 18K | 1.8K |
| Original sound or audio (no named track) | 80% | 59% |
| Median length | 86 s | 41 s |
| Median hashtags per video | 5 | 5 |
| Captions of 10+ words | 38% | 51% |
| Fastest format (5+ videos) | GRWM (get ready with me) | Story or fact hook |
In our samples: the median beauty TikTok gets 9.8× the views per day of the median beauty Reel. The two apps don’t count a view in exactly the same way, so read the direction, not the exact ratio. The fastest format differs between the apps, so check beauty Reels trends before you assume a TikTok winner will travel.
A 30-day plan for a new beauty TikTok
Four weeks of posting, scoring and remaking.
- Week 1: film a batch of nine. Three formats, three videos each, all inside your lane. One sitting keeps the light and your look consistent.
- Post on a schedule you can keep. We suggest 3–5 videos a week for the first month. That is our rule of thumb, not a TikTok rule: early on, every post teaches you something.
- Score each video on day three. Divide its views by the median of your other videos older than three days. 2× is a signal; 3× is an outlier (how outlier scoring works).
- Weeks 2–3: remake the winners. Keep the mechanic (hook, structure, length) and change the look or the product. Drop a format that stays below your median after three tries.
- Read the comments as a script list. “What shade is that?” and “do this for hooded eyes” are your next videos. Say in the first second which comment you are answering.
- Week 4: study accounts your size. Run 5–10 beauty accounts about your size through the free outlier finder. Their breakouts show which mechanics work for accounts like yours right now. The beauty competitor teardown shows what to log.
We make Followlly, so weigh our view accordingly: none of this needs a paid tool. A notes app, our free tools and the beauty TikTok trends page cover the first month.
