TikTok engagement rate calculator
Enter a TikTok’s views, likes, comments, shares and saves to get its engagement rate two ways: by views (how strongly the people who saw it reacted) and by followers (how it compares to the size of the account). The formulas, a worked example and medians from 191 recent TikToks we measured are below.
Enter views (and followers, for the follower-based rate) to see the result.
Use the numbers shown under the video, or the exact ones from TikTok Studio. 12,400, 12.4K and 1.2M all work. Leave a field empty if you don’t have it.

What this week’s TikTok data says
Across 191 TikToks with 1,000+ views — fitness, food, travel, beauty, money, tech and pets niche videos and TikTok’s US trending feed, all posted in the last 21 days — the median engagement rate by views was 10.9%, and the middle half of videos landed between 6.5% and 16.4%. Travel (TikTok) had the highest median (14.0%), Pets (TikTok) the lowest (10.2%). Shares and saves made up a median 19% of all interactions, so likes drive most of the number; when a video’s shares or saves are far above that, people are passing it on or keeping it, and that part of the video is worth studying.
How to use it: run your last five posts through the calculator. If one sits well above your usual rate, film another video with the same hook or format this week; if all of them are below the median for your niche, rework the first two seconds (the hook) before you give up on the topic.
TikTok engagement rate formula
Two formulas are in use. They answer different questions.
1. Engagement rate by views (recommended for TikTok)
This is the rate of people who did something after watching. Because TikTok shows most videos to people who don’t follow you (the For You feed), views are the fair denominator: it compares a 2,000-view video and a 2-million-view video on the same scale, and it works for any account size.
2. Engagement rate by followers
This is the older social-media formula, still used in many brand and agency briefs. It tells you how big the reaction was relative to your audience. On TikTok it swings a lot: a video that reaches the For You feed can collect more interactions than the account has followers, so values above 100% are normal for viral posts — in our pets TikTok sample (19 videos) the median follower-based rate was 119%. This version usually leaves saves out; if a brand brief defines it differently, follow the brief.
Which one should you report?
Use ER by views to judge a video and to compare yourself with other creators. Use ER by followers when a brand asks for it, and say which formula you used — the two numbers are not comparable.
Worked example
A video with 48,000 views, 3,900 likes, 85 comments, 210 shares and 340 saves, posted by an account with 12,500 followers:
By followers: (3,900 + 85 + 210) ÷ 12,500 = 4,195 ÷ 12,500 = 33.6%
Same video, two very different numbers: 9.45% says how the viewers reacted; 33.6% mostly says the video traveled well beyond the account’s followers. Against this week’s TikTok median of 10.9%, the 9.45% view-based rate is close to typical.

Videos with 1,000+ views posted in the last 21 days, found through niche hashtags (and TikTok’s US trending feed). These are videos that already surfaced, so treat the median as “what’s working now”, not as the average account. Not enough data yet for: Fitness (TikTok) (11), Food (TikTok) (11), Tech (TikTok) (1), US trending feed (TikTok) (10). Reels rows use likes + comments only, because Instagram does not show saves publicly — they are not comparable with the TikTok rows.

TikTok average views calculator
Average and median views of your recent videos, and how many of them were outliers.
Paste the view counts of your recent videos — one per line or separated by spaces (12400, 12.4K and 1.2M all work).
The average is easy to distort: one video with 500K views next to nine with 10K gives an “average” of 59K that none of your videos actually got. The median — the middle value — is your typical video. Anything at 2× the median or more is worth a closer look; at 3× or more it is what the Followlly app flags as an outlier by default (you can change the threshold). Our outlier finder lists any public account’s videos from 2× up, so you also see the near-misses.
