Best TikTok analytics tool: free options, paid tools and honest alternatives
There is no single best TikTok analytics tool, only the best tool for the question you are asking. Your own numbers, a competitor’s breakout and “what is working in my niche this week” need different data, and only some of it is free.
As of October 2026, paid short-video research tools start at $49 a month for both Virlo Starter (2,000 credits) and Sandcastles Pro (100 credits, or $39 a month billed yearly), and at $29 a month for Followlly Creator, a flat early-access price. The free layer covers more than most people expect. TikTok Studio shows your own watch time and traffic sources, and TikTok’s Creative Center lists popular hashtags and songs by country. Our own free trend pages currently rank 629 Reels and TikToks from 602 creators across 15 niche samples by views per day (updated Oct 2, 2026).
So start with the question, not the brand. Below are the five kinds of tools, what each one can and can’t answer, the free options worth using first, and a side-by-side of two popular paid research tools, Virlo and Sandcastles. Each has a full, sourced comparison page.
Five kinds of TikTok analytics tools, and the question each one answers
Most “best tool” lists mix these up. Pick the category first, then the product.
| Category | Answers | Free? | Blind spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native analytics TikTok Studio, Instagram Insights | How did my videos do? Who watched, and for how long? | Free, built into the apps | Your own account only. No competitors, no niche view. |
| Platform trend pages TikTok Creative Center | Which hashtags, songs and creators are popular in my country? | Free | Platform-wide and built for advertisers. Niche cuts are limited to industry filters, and it doesn’t explain why a video works. |
| Viral video databases e.g. Sandcastles | Which formats and hooks beat their creator’s usual numbers? | Sample collections only; paid from $39/mo billed yearly (October 2026) | Strong on past winners. You still have to map them to your niche and your own numbers. |
| Social listening and trend intelligence e.g. Virlo | What is rising across a market, a set of creators or ad creatives? | Free tools and data pages; paid from $49/mo (October 2026) | Credit-metered. Plans run from solo operators to agencies, and the depth is often more than a solo creator needs. |
| Niche watch with a film-next plan Followlly | What should I film next, given my niche, my competitors and my numbers? | Free tools and trend pages; paid from $29/mo | Instagram Reels and TikTok niche data only. Smaller samples than big databases. No API. |
The best free TikTok analytics tools (and what they can’t do)
TikTok Studio: your own numbers
Built into TikTok and free. It shows views, watch time, traffic sources and follower growth for every video you post, which no outside tool can see. It only covers your own account.
TikTok Creative Center: platform trends
Free. It lists popular hashtags, songs, creators and videos by region over the last 7 to 30 days, and hashtags can be filtered by industry. It is built for advertisers, so it won’t tell you which of those trends fits your niche or why a video took off.
Free one-off checks
Our outlier finder shows which recent videos of any public TikTok or Instagram account beat the creator’s usual views. The engagement rate calculator works out engagement rate by views or by followers and compares it with niche medians, and the TikTok trend finder searches recent niche videos by keyword, hashtag, sound or creator. Virlo also publishes free generators and a trending sounds page.
A spreadsheet, once a week
Tracking competitors by hand takes about 30 minutes a week for five accounts. Step-by-step methods with a copyable template: TikTok competitor analysis and Instagram competitor analysis.
Public niche trend pages
Our trend pages rank niche Reels and TikToks by views per day, with links to every original video. The samples are refreshed about every 7 days and cover the last 21 days. No account needed.

Comparisons and guides
How we compare tools
We read each competitor’s own pricing page and FAQ, note the date, and link the source next to every table. We only list features we could verify on their site; where something isn’t stated, we say so instead of guessing. We make Followlly, so weigh our view accordingly. That is also why every comparison has a section on when the other tool is the better choice.
